Mary Tyler is an active freelancer based in Chicago, Illinois. Ms. Tyler, an associate member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, has performed with the Lexington Symphony Orchestra, Berkshire Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix (Boston), Gainesville Chamber Orchestra, Triton Brass Quintet, and is a founding member of the Obsidian Brass Quintet. In 2005 and 2007, Ms. Tyler was the winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop’s National Classical Solo Competition, hosted by The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own”.
Ms. Tyler is an avid chamber musician and is constantly seeking new ways to engage audiences in the experience of classical music. While living in Boston, Ms. Tyler was a member of Phoenix, a chamber orchestra dedicated to bridging the widening gap between classical music and 21st century audiences by providing a fun, social, and interactive concert experience. During her time at Northwestern as a member of the Obsidian Brass Quintet, Ms. Tyler was a winner of the International Brass Quintet Competition, finalist at the Alice Coleman Chamber Music Competition, and semi-finalist at the Plowman, J.C. Arriaga, and Fischoff Chamber Music Competitions.
Currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University, Ms. Tyler is a student of Michael Mulcahy, Timothy Higgins, Douglas Wright, Christopher Davis, and Randall Hawes. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University in 2011 and her Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, where she was a student of Toby Oft. Ms. Tyler is an alumnus of the Tanglewood Music Center, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Cleveland Trombone Seminar, and Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar.
