LUST, MYSTERY AND DESPAIR is a love affair with the romance, mystery, and intrigue of Latin Music. Highlighting Astor Piazzolla’s mastery of tangos, Cacilda Borges Barbosa’s luscious harmonies, and a new, bossa-inspired composition from Lillian Yee, Axiom explores the vast wealth of musical idioms from Latin origins.

VOICES OF SILENCE is a celebration of music composed or inspired by those whose voices, ideologies, and causes were censored during their lifetime: Italian renaissance composer Barbara Strozzi, a woman speaking of love and pain in a male-dominated circle; Florence Price, the first female African American composer to have her work performed by a major orchestra; David Sampson, reacting to the murder of his brother by the Ku Klux Klan. Through music, these voices have become immortalized and what once was silenced, now echoes through history.

MONUMENTS centers on the epic composition by Peter Maxwell Davies that he describes as going “beyond the obvious extreme virtuosity of playing.” Widely considered to be the most demanding composition written for brass chamber music, this rarely performed work is exuberant, intimate, and deeply intricate. Along with Davies’ composition, Monuments features other staples of the original brass quintet repertoire by Joan Tower, George Walker, and David Faleris.

VISAGES OF NICK explores the many faces of Christmas throughout the ages. We embrace the diverse array of beauty that this season can bring us, with music by Duke Ellington, Percy Grainger, Kevin Allen, Elfrida Andrée, Carolynn Hanney, and many other new settings of beloved traditional carols across the globe.
